New ADA compliant toilet facilities with unisex facilities. The original scope was to also add a pantry wing to the church so that staff would not have to cart shelves and goods from a house 300 feet away. Over time, it was decided to utilize an underused kindergarten room for pantry storage and use the fellowship hall for pantry shelves. Therefore, additions were no longer necessary.
The original toilet rooms were very small. We took those and two offices to create a bank of single-stall toilet rooms that open to a common sink area. When we presented the idea of having non-gender toilet rooms some were reluctant. Yet others noted that some older parishioners won’t come to church if they rely on a spouse to assist, and with this concept that issue goes away. It addresses the LGBTQ issue as well, making the church a welcoming facility to all.
In 2000 the State of Illinois passed a law requiring all new one toilet bathrooms are to be gender neutral. We like to think we were ahead of the curve.
