The homeowner came to us with a design used for another house he wanted to incorporate into his master bedroom and garage addition. We massaged the design a couple of times to both work with existing roof lines and meet city height requirements. The upper level master bedroom has a dramatic cathedral ceiling. The addition was asymmetrical to the existing house to preserve required bedroom windows. Another unusual feature was to cantilever the floor structure for the master bath to get everything the homeowner wanted to fit, which added to roof complication but we worked it out. A last minute request was for the large round window in the center of the master bedroom gable, right where we had a roof beam support post. The solution was use four quarter-round windows to create the large round-window look and keep the support post.

New 1,600 square-foot house about 1/2 mile from a lake in a resort community, 1.5 story with three bedrooms, three baths, open living-dining-kitchen plan. The kitchen has a window seat that overlooks the back yard, which was a top priority to the client which we instantly fell in love with too. A laundry/mud room creates the frequently used rear entrance. Exposed rafters, a screened porch, and a fireplace were important design and living space features.

We initially designed a narrower house to demonstrate that we could meet their program and fall within property setbacks. This gave the house much more of a bungalow feel than the final design. The client requested and was granted variances to exceed side and rear yard setbacks, allowing for the more spread-out plan. The house has a crawl space accessible with a partial stair for easier access to and from this area.

This house had a very interesting history. The builder approached us to design a home for a lot to help sell it to a potential buyer. We designed a modern style home to fit the narrow but steep lot. We were doing remodeling work for a client with a home a mile away and they heard this vacant lot was available and bought it, hiring us to design this one as well. This design underwent heavy modification, specifically to the master bedroom level which originally was set back from the lake front but was expanded to achieve five bedrooms upstairs.

They also wanted the house to have a more nautical look, which is where the gambrel roof came from. Motifs such as the curved entry roof ties it back to its Midwest setting, though we maintained the grid style trim pattern developed for the modern design, fitting into the shingle style of its cladding. We also retained the wall recess in the west bank of windows to break up this facade and give some interest and definition to the open interiors.
