We have a long and wonderful working relationship with David and Wanda Zahrt who owned a trucking business out of this small town in Northern Indiana. Twenty-Two years earlier we did a roofing feasibility study for this church and we were invited back to rehabilitate their basement kitchen.

We ran into several issues needing upgrades to comply with modern codes. The biggest challenge was getting a proper exhaust hood to serve the facility. These are usually placed on the roof but since this was a basement kitchen with rooms above and a sloped roof we have to find an alternative. We had to develop a mechanical courtyard adjacent to the church’s front entrance and screen the equipment to not distract from the entrance aesthetics. Another challenge was selecting and engineering equipment to stay within the available electric service supplied. A couple of high wattage coffee pots were pushing us close but some reworking of circuits kept us comfortably within code. We worked with the church committee to select finishes and materials.

In our past we worked with a school architecture firm where we developed a relationship with a food service consultant, who we brought on the project to assist. We brought on an mech/elec engineer to assist with those building systems.

The result was a modern kitchen well suited for events from church potlucks to fully prepared meals.

Vorndran and Associates of Fort Wayne, Indiana served as the food service consultant.

Yagla Engineering of Geneva, Illinois provided Plumbing, Mechanical, and Electrical Engineering Services.

We worked with Pastor Zachary “Zak” Wagner and his congregation to renovate their 1962 church building with a modernization to accommodate current and future programs. We updated all interior spaces and reconfigured most, and also designed an east entry addition complimenting the existing colonial architecture. All spaces received new floor and wall finishes, and new ceilings except the Sanctuary, to accommodate modern ventilation requirements and energy efficient LED lighting.

Site work:

The majority of new project work was land planning under our design direction. We reconfigured the North Lot for better Daycare drop off and more efficient parking, and changed the one curb cut onto Ardmore Avenue to two. We modified the North Side Drive to add parking and construct a walk for safer access to East parking. We moved the East Drive that was against the building fifteen feet east for an overall a safer arrangement. With the new space against the building we created an East Entry Addition, a Daycare playground against the building relocated from across the drive, a masonry dumpster enclosure, and mechanical yards to relocate unsightly rooftop equipment. We worked with ComEd to relocate a power pole for the new playground area. Revised and expanded East Side Parking made demolishing existing parsonage practical, and we renovated a recently purchased neighboring house to be their new parsonage, for which Berneche2 was also the Architect.

Lower Level:

We reconfigured all Daycare spaces to suit this program, changing the one large room into two spaces. Daycare also had to be temporarily moved upstairs to keep the program running. We remodeled the church kitchen with new casework and replaced the quarry tile flooring with epoxy. The Fellowship Hall and Choir Room received new finishes. Bathrooms were modernized and made ADA-compliant. A new Hands and Feet room with a fire-rated Dutch Door provides space for the Church to provide resources to those in need. Two new boiers replaced the original massive one, and ductwork to supply fresh air and meet modern codes were a significant part of the work.

Main Level:

We overhauled North Wing meeting rooms into a Café and two adjacent meeting rooms with operable glass walls to expand the Café. We created three new single-stall toilet rooms so persons have the convenient option to not go downstairs for a bathroom. We relocated the Nursery here from the lower level. We replaced a small elevator with a new ADA compliant model which required structural modifications. We addressed a roof truss deficiency uncovered during construction. We renovated the Entry Foyer with new coat racks and two new large windows into the sanctuary which allows the Foyer for provide overflow seating. The South Office Wing was fully reconfigured to create efficient single person offices, a general office area, and a new conference room. While the Sanctuary plan was little altered, the Chancel was modified with the removal of a raised platform to allow for flexible use, construction of music storage cabinets, full remodel of the sacristy, and new finishes in all areas.

This was our second largest commission and our largest in Illinois. Our work with Schramm Construction, KDI Interior Design, and Jacob Hefner Civil Engineers will serve this congregation for years to come.

New ADA compliant toilet facilities with unisex facilities. The original scope was to also add a pantry wing to the church so that staff would not have to cart shelves and goods from a house 300 feet away. Over time, it was decided to utilize an underused kindergarten room for pantry storage and use the fellowship hall for pantry shelves. Therefore, additions were no longer necessary.

The original toilet rooms were very small. We took those and two offices to create a bank of single-stall toilet rooms that open to a common sink area. When we presented the idea of having non-gender toilet rooms some were reluctant. Yet others noted that some older parishioners won’t come to church if they rely on a spouse to assist, and with this concept that issue goes away. It addresses the LGBTQ issue as well, making the church a welcoming facility to all.

In 2000 the State of Illinois passed a law requiring all new one toilet bathrooms are to be gender neutral. We like to think we were ahead of the curve.

We served as the consulting architect to Goss Pasma Architects for this $3.5m addition and renovation to this church facility completed in 2009.

This project enabled Berneche2 Architecture to open its doors in 2006 with the initial goal to partner with the project architect. The project began as a $7m addition/renovation which included an L-shaped addition to create a courtyard with the church. Toward the end of the construction document phase the committee paired down the project to solely include renovations and small sanctuary additions.

Innovations included roof overbuild structures to allow for high-velocity ducts for sanctuary air conditioning. This also eliminated two low-slope roofs to allow for more economical shingle roofing. An ice storage system was employed to provide economical cooling. Planters at the front entrance were replaced with steps and an outdoor plaza to facilitate the Church’s Ministry On The Street program and create a welcoming entry. An elevator addition was done to provide ADA access to the basement. Site work and civil engineering were part of the project. A lighting designer was brought on the team for both innovative lighting strategies and a modern lighting control system.

The parish pastor approached us to look at options to connect their existing Catholic Church and school together with a new addition. The project initially began with the need to relocate four meeting rooms from a modular building needing repairs. It soon expanded to include relocation of a meditation chapel from under the school library, and to provide a suitable fellowship space/narthex for the church off the primary parking areas. We looked at both one and two-story options, and the building committee liked the efficiency of the two-story approach. Three pairs of stained glass windows in the church were removed to create doors that encourage parishioners to exit the church into the gathering space to encourage fellowship after services.

A unique challenge was that the school building is a split-level building, so while the addition would be on the same level as the church floor, it would straddle between school floors. A stair had to be designed to connect the various levels, and a two-sided elevator provides the school with wheelchair access for the first time since its 1950 opening.

The building is equipped with audio visual services including monitors in all rooms, electronic signage, and digital lighting controls. Security consists of card readers at all doors and also in the elevator to restrict second floor access to certain hours (such as denying school kids a place to hang out). Project consultants included Tango Interior Design, Mechanical and Electrical Engineer, and Haas Civil Engineers.
